Boswellia

Boswellia, (also popularly known as Indian frankincense), is a resin based herbal extract obtained from the Boswellia tree. One of its major health benefits is its anti-inflammatory effect. Hence it may help with inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma. Boswellia serrata contains various derivatives of Boswellic acid including β-boswellic acid, acetyl-β-boswellic acid, 11-keto-β-boswellic acid and acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid These acids inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), an enzyme that produces leukotriene. Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is thought to be the most powerful of the four boswellic acids.

Green Tea

The polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCC) in green tea is thought to be 200 times more powerful than vitamin E for neutralizing free radicals. One small study found that drinking green tea helped prevent dental cavities. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition has been shown to reduce dentin caries progression, but its role in dental erosion has not yet been assessed. This study tested the hypothesis that gels containing MMP inhibitors (epigallocatechin gallate-EGCG) can prevent dental erosion. Green tea also possesses antibacterial activity. It acts as an effective antioxidant because of its free radical-scavenging and metal-chelating ability. Green tea is a great source of beneficial phytochemicals which can find its place to treat various health ailments.

Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. Turmeric is also known as Curcumin and Indian Saffron. It is called Haldi in India. Its active ingredient is curcumin and it has a distinctly earthy, slightly bitter, slightly hot peppery flavor and a mustardy smell. Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurvedic medicine. It was first used as a dye and then later for its possible medicinal properties. Turmeric also contains many phytonutrients and essential oils like termerone, curlone, curumen, cineole and p-cymene. Turmeric benefits in epilepsy and bleeding problems, in various skin diseases and respiratory diseases. Turmeric reduces fevers, diarrhoea, urinary problems, poisoning etc. Ulcers respond well to external application of turmeric. It removes pus and watery discharges like leucorrhoea. Brushing the teeth with turmeric, salt and mustard oil strengthen the teeth.

Aloe Vera

The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine since the beginning of the first century AD. Aloe Vera plant possesses various medicinal properties. It possesses therapeutic as well as cosmetic values. Aloe gel has been used for topical treatment of wounds, minor burns, and skin irritations. Aloe products for internal use have been promoted for constipation, coughs, wounds, ulcers, diabetes, cancer, headaches, arthritis, immune-system deficiencies, and many other conditions. Aloe gel is alleged to be useful for dry skin conditions, especially eczema around the eyes and sensitive facial skin. Externally Aloe Vera gel is helpful for abrasions, acne, boils, inflamed eyes, wrinkles. Gel increases the availability of oxygen to the skin, increases the synthesis and strength of tissue and reduces inflammation. It has tremendous moisturizing effect on the skin.

Vitamin C content of amla increases in the sun dried amla for example if 100 gms. of fresh amla gives out 600 mgs of Vitamin C, then when it is sun dried, its content increases to 1500 to 1600 mg. Amla is the most concentrated form of Vitamin C found in the plant kingdom, and when the whole fruit is used rather than an active ingredient, the Vitamin C is easily assimilated by the human body. Studies indicate that it does not loose its Vitamin C content on storage. The extract of amla also has antimicrobial properties. A decoction of the leaves is used as a chemical-free bactericidal mouthwash. According to ayurveda it is sweet in taste and has cooling property.
